Dave Schwartz is the Board Treasurer and William G. and Virginia K. Karnes Research Professor of Law at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law where he has focused his teaching and research on intellectual property and patent law, with a particular emphasis on empirical studies of patents. He joined the faculty in 2015, and he served as the Associate Dean of Research & Intellectual Life at the Law School from 2019 until 2022. He has authored or co-authored more than 30 articles. He also co-authored a casebook on the law of design and co-edited a handbook on analytical methods on the law & economics of intellectual property. He is a Co-PI of SCALES OKN. Prior to entering academics in 2006, Schwartz practiced intellectual property law, focusing on patents and patent litigation, for more than a decade. He was a partner at two intellectual property boutique firms in Chicago and began his career in 1995 as an associate at Jenner & Block.
