Measures to support accessibility
The SCALES OKN takes the following measures to ensure accessibility of SCALES:
- Include accessibility as part of our mission statement.
- Include accessibility throughout our internal policies.
- Assign clear accessibility goals and responsibilities.
- Include users with accessibility concerns in our feedback groups and design considerations
Conformance status
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. SCALES is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA. Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard.

Limitations and alternatives
Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility of SCALES, there may be some limitations. Below is a description of known limitations, and potential solutions. Please contact us if you observe an issue not listed below.
Known limitations for SCALES:
- Data Explorer: The Data Explorer may have some outputs that are difficult for screen readers and assistive technologies to interpret because the data explorer is still in beta mode and we haven't encountered all of its limitations yet. We monitor user emails and dispatch members of our engineering team to provide the output in alternative formats. Please contact us at [email protected] if you encounter an issue.
- Off-site links to descriptions of SCALES work: a number of links direct users to off-site resources that may or may not adhere to accessibility standards because we are unable to guarantee the use of accessibility standards by external entities. We are providing external entities who talk about SCALES with alt-text and other tools to make their writing about SCALES more accessible. Please contact us at [email protected] if you encounter an issue.
Assessment approach
The SCALES OKN assessed the accessibility of SCALES by the following approaches:
