History
SCALES originated from a project called the Northwestern Open Access to Court Record Initiative (NOACRI) in 2018. Supported by grants like the National Science Foundation Convergence Accelerator and the National Science Foundation Proto-Open Knowledge Networks, NOACRI expanded into the SCALES project in 2020. SCALES, Systematic Content Analysis of Litigation EventS, has continued to engage with researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to develop software and database tools to help enrich court data and make it publicly accessible and easily analyzable. The SCALES OKN was incorporated as a full-fledged non-profit in 2025, so we can take years of research and engineering work and put it to use in advancing our mission of court data transparency.
